Piraeus Food culture - Cuisine

Prior to making a more analytical reference to the prevailing tendency in the local cuisine, let’s recall a historical fact that justifies today’s result in menus served. Many refugees originating from Minor Asia and Pontos were settled in the city and in the surrounding suburbs, bringing a lot of cooking habits with them. This influence is aobvious in many dishes found in the city’s restaurants and taverns.
Fresh fish is offered, either grilled, or fried, depending on the kind of fish selected.
Fish starters is the undisputable part in the beginning of any meal.
The series of fine specialities include spaghetti with lobster (astakomakaronada), fried mussels, mussels pilaf, grilled octopus, scampi, fried clams and many other delicacies, fulfilling any gourmet’s fantasy.
On our way from Mikrolimano to Faliro,  numerous bars are met.
In Pasalimani, live music entertainment is found in many stage productions with greek music.
As it was mentioned earlier, a large number of clubs is operating in deserted store rooms and industrial plants.
Furthermore, East of Mikrolimano, a number of clubs, attracts the younger people.
Small groups play live music in most of fishtaverns and restaurants, turning your meal to a pleasant moment.
The refugees settled in the city, carried a characteristic type of songs as well. Called rempetika, are based in the tradition and they are addressed to audiences of low income people, industrial workers and to refugees themselves, reminding the past experience through the lyrics and the music. A quite interesting trip to a unique world of music.
